Update: the film has now been pushed to July 2021, so any possible plans for this trailer are likely now out of the window.

With – barring any other further delays due to the situation in the United States – Tenet and Mulan just weeks away from arriving into cinemas globally with an aim to restart the big screen experience following the COVID-19 related lockdowns, studios appear to be preparing brand new looks at their upcoming slates for the remainder of the year to arrive in time for the reopening of cinemas. And it appears we have our first stuch trailer of this debut on the way: what looks to be an extended peek at Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick has been rated today by the UK’s BBFC.

Given how long it has been – 7 months – since our last look at the Tom Cruise-starring sequel, and the considerably longer runtime of the rated piece, we expect this to be a brand-new full trailer, as opposed to just re-dated version of existing pieces (which so far Disney and 20th Century Studios have been sending out to UK and other international cinemas for the likes of Black Widow, Mulan and The French Dispatch). UPDATE: there is also a chance this is an existing behind-the-scenes featurette. As always, we will have more details on this new Top Gun trailer as soon as they arrive.

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw, call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.”

Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

Starring Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Charles Parnell, Bashir Salahuddin, Monica Barbaro, Jay Ellis, Danny Ramirez, Greg Tarzan Davis with Ed Harris, the film is currently set for release December 23 in the UK and the U.S..
